Don’t Let Your Eyes Age You

Due to their delicate nature, the eyes are often one of the first places to show the signs of aging. Whether it is the appearance of fine lines at the corner of the eye, pronounced under-eye bags, a heavy upper lid, or a droopy brow—our eyes age in numerous and varying ways. Many patients come to Dr. Burke seeking her advice on whether dermal fillers or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at her Barrington plastic surgery practice can rejuvenate their eyes.

Lax Brow and Eyelid

Problem: As we age, we lose the healthy fat padding under our eyebrows. Combined with a lack of muscle tone and thinning skin—both the brow and upper eyelid will droop. This causes the eyes to appear smaller.
Fix: Hyaluronic acid (HA) facial fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® help to restore the natural fullness beneath the brow. By carefully placing the injection sites, Dr. Burke creates an uplifted brow arch and adds a natural fullness to the upper eyelid. Injectable treatments like BOTOX® can also be used to relax the surrounding muscles that cause pesky smile lines and crow’s feet to form.

Saggy Upper Eyelid

Problem: Excess skin and a sagging upper eyelid can create a “hood” over the eye.
Fix: When excess skin is present, upper blepharoplasty is the best and most effective solution. More commonly known as an eyelift, upper blepharoplasty helps to reshape the eye by removing extra skin. Alleviating the eye of its “hooded” appearance will help to restore a youthful wide-eyed appeal, as you can see in the before-and-after pictures below. Dr. Burke is further able to help rejuvenate the eye’s appearance by removing or repositioning the surrounding fat.

Under-eye Bags and Hollows

Problem: A constant sleepy and tired appearance as excessive wrinkles, under-eye bags, and hollows form beneath the eye. Many of Dr. Burke’s patients also are self-conscious about their under-eye puffiness.
Fix: Lower blepharoplasty surgically refines and can smooth the under eye area. Dr. Burke uses a variety of techniques to give the lower eye a refreshed appearance, including canthopexy or canthoplasty (repositioning or tightening of the tendons) and removal of excess skin—to help restore a natural eyelid shape and support the lower lid. Fat causing puffiness and pronounced under-eye bags may be reduced or repositioned. Fat may also be placed where hollows exist—creating a youthfully smooth and firm under eye appearance.

The patient shown below combined upper and lower blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the entire eye area. You can also see more eyelid surgery before-and-after pictures in our photo gallery.

As a noticeable and prominent facial feature, it is understandable to be concerned with the appearance of aging eyes. Through specialized training, Dr. Burke has acquired a number of intricate techniques that focus on creating a natural-appearing refinement of an aging eye.
