What Can Eyelid Surgery Do for You?

Eyelid Surgery Model Pretty Eyes

The area around the eyes is often the first place to show signs of aging. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, at our Barrington plastic surgery center can diminish your upper and lower eyelid concerns and help you achieve youthful, yet natural-looking results.

What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a versatile procedure that can correct different aesthetic and functional concerns. It can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Blepharoplasty surgery can address the following issues:

  • Puffiness in the upper eyelids
  • Sagging skin around the eyes
  • Bags and dark circles beneath the eyes
  • Visual obstructions caused by drooping eyelids

Blepharoplasty can also help restore the natural shape, position, and function of the eyelid if you have trouble closing your eyelids or suffer from tight eyelids.

Who is a good candidate?

Candidates for eyelid surgery are often unhappy with drooping upper eyelids that makes the eyes appear slit-like rather than round and awake. Candidates usually have bulges of fat and tear troughs on the lower lids next to the nose caused by natural aging and gravity. Many complain that these traits make them look tired, even when they are well-rested.

Good candidates should be in overall good health, have realistic expectations for surgery, and have a positive outlook. Dr. Burke will do a thorough evaluation during your consultation to determine whether you are a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.

How is the procedure performed?

Blepharoplasty is an intricate and delicate surgical procedure. Depending on your situation, you may be able to undergo the procedure with local anesthesia and mild sedation. In this process, the eyes are numbed with a topical anesthetic, and then additional anesthesia is administered by injection. Dr. Burke proceeds by carefully removing excess skin and reducing puffiness, skillfully concealing the incisions in the eyelids’ natural creases, so they will be undetectable.

What should I expect for recovery?

The recovery process varies from patient to patient. Swelling is normal after your procedure, but it will subside quickly if you do not wear makeup or contact lenses during your initial healing. You can resume wearing makeup after about a week, and we recommend waiting at least 14 days before wearing contacts. Most people return to work and other light daily activities in under a week.

When will I be able to see complete results?

Your results will appear gradually, as swelling will camouflage your results for several days. We understand that it can be difficult to be patient, but it’s important to give yourself adequate time to heal. Carefully follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions—this will improve your chances of a faster recovery. Ignoring your specific instructions can put you at risk for complications, which can lead to unsatisfactory results.

Dr. Renee Burke is one of the only female plastic surgeons in the area who is specially trained in eyelid surgery. She completed a combined aesthetic and oculoplastic fellowship, making her a premier choice for your procedure. My mom is thinking about getting blepharoplasty surgery to improve her self-confidence, so I am happy that I found this article. I appreciate that you say eyelid surgery will help to remove the bags beneath your eyes and will help my mom to look more youthful and feel more confident. Also, I did not know that the procedure will also enhance the shape of my mom’s eyes and people can focus on the beautiful blue color of her eyes. https://www.wliumd.com/eyelids-cosmetic-newport-beach/upper-blepharoplasty/
